Preventing Spam

Here are some tips and links to help prevent spam:

* Don't give out your primary e-mail address. When you register on a
Web site or in a group. If you must sign up for services, want to receive
more info, register for newspapers or domains; use a free e-mail address
from a site like Yahoo to create an address especially for that purpose.

* Posting your email address anywhere on the Internet will attract
spam. Spammers collect email addresses using programs such as spiders,
crawlers and bots that search the Internet for email addresses to add to
their lists. I would recommend that you hide any email address you want to
list behind a link or not list them at all.

* Alter your e-mail address when you post it. Don't put your e-mail
address in plain text on your Web site. An effective way to trick the
spiders that traverse the Web to harvest e-mail addresses is to disguise
your e-mail address by stripping out periods and "@" symbols.

* Use fake addresses. Most web-based sign-up forms require an e-mail
address. If you don't want to hear from the site (and don't need a
confirmation e-mail or tech support), don't give a real address.

* Never, ever reply to a spam message. Never reply to spam messages
even when they entice you to reply to "remove" you from their mailing lists.
Often the instructions are either fraudulent, or a way to collect more
addresses. Replying confirms to the spammers that your e-mail address is
active, and you may receive even more spam

* Don't click any links in a spam e-mail.

* Don't forward an e-mail from someone you don't know to a list of
people.

* Don't give your real address to a Web site for registration.

* Review Web sites' privacy policies. Make sure that you're checking
all the privacy options you need to check. Sometimes these are hard to find,
but they're there. And sometimes there is more than one box to check. Some
sites assume the right to share your information; responsible sites will
give you a way to opt out.

* Do not forward chain e-mail.
